Around the JLPT registration period I decided that N5 wouldn't be much of a challenge and opted for N4. Some things to keep in mind: N5, other than the kanji-specific testing sections, has virtually no kanji in it, even if it's a word that you should know the kanji for. This is just painful. Otherwise this is a very beginner level test and should be easy for you. N4 is often thought of as the largest leap up from the level before it in terms of
N1 and maybe N2 are resume-worthy. These levels of the test are known/recognized and prove to Japanese employers you can communicate in Japanese. N3, N4, and N5 are pretty much meaningless, in terms of your resume. They can be good ways to "objectively measure" your Japanese, if you're into that.
